Three Big Reasons To Notice You Inner Critic

We all have one, an inner critic.  Psychologists have a term for this critical not-nice voice in our head and it’s called the Superego.

Merriam-Webster defines it as “the part of a person’s mind that relates to attitudes about what is right and wrong and to feelings of guilt”.

The longer definition goes on to say that it is only partly conscious and functions to reward and punish through a system of moral attitudes, conscience, and a sense of guilt, and to compare.

The Superego’s function is to make sure you know the “rules” of society. Like when you were 6 years old and knew how to wait your turn for lunch. Or that you (and all of us) know to “go” on green and “stop” on red.

It’s all about how we were “corrected” as we were growing up. Remember liking that? Yea, me either.  Never felt good about myself when that happened. 

Well, guess what?! It still doesn’t feel good. But now it’s INSIDE our head.  

See if any of the following are in your life right not which may indicate that the inner critic may be running the show a little too much.

You lack energy and enthusiasm.  If this is happening to you right now, then the inner critic may be rearing its ugly head.  If you’re having a hard time getting out of bed in the morning, you may not be doing things that really resonate with you.

Do what resonates with your spirit and you will be jumping out of your bed in the morning to be able to shine your uniqueness to the world.  Howard Thurman had it right when he said,

“Don’t ask what the world needs, ask what makes you come alive. Then go and do that. Because what the world needs are people who are alive”.

Do what resonates with the inner critic and BAM, there goes your energy. The inner critic is the biggest energy drainer that I know. 

You feel small or less-than, then everyone in the room. Yes, that “feeling” of being less-then is a hallmark of the inner critic. No one wants to feel small, beneath others or not feeling of value thoughts.  It separates you from others and we humans have an innate need for connectedness. 

 

You’re not having fun.   An intuitive teacher, Fran Gallaher, of Really Flourish says it like this. “The Superego is the number one spoilsport, wet blanket, discourager or downright preventer of new experiences of self, of vitality, of life and of intuition”. 

If any of these sound familiar than the best thing you can do right now is to become curious and inquire as to what your heart is saying and what your mind might be saying.

Your biggest hint, that your thoughts are coming from your inner critic, is the thoughts will have NO COMPASSION for you.
